May Workshop Gardening for Hummingbirds and Butterflies - Morning

TOPIC DESCRIPTION:   Discussions will focus on the benefits to your garden of attracting birds, hummingbirds and butterflies, the types of plants and habitat that provide food sources and shelter, supplementing nesting materials and ways to keep the environment safe for these creatures.  Marcia will also share how she removed her front lawn and replaced it with a beautiful bed of hummingbird and butterfly plants and the challenges of growing on her backyard slope.  Reference material will be provided.

TEACHERMarcia Van Loy

As a San Diego Master Gardener for 14 years, Marcia specializes in attracting birds, hummingbirds and butterflies to home gardens and is a sought after speaker throughout the county.  She has gardened for over 30 years in the Clairemont area of San Diego and in the past coordinated their Town Council’s annual garden tour for nine years.  After many years of collecting rustic bird houses, she now teaches Master Gardeners how to build them as a way to raise funds for their educational programs.   Her garden is a Certified Wildlife Habitat, and an Earth Friendly Garden and was featured in the San Diego Home and Garden Lifestyle Magazine’s April 2013 edition.  Last fall she presented a video featured on County News Center titled “Yard Makeovers to Cut Water and Add Color”.  Growing plants for hummingbirds and butterflies in her hillside garden is one of Marcia’s favorite subjects to share with others.

To be held rain or shine.
