    Topic: Tomatoes with Farmer Roy

    Description:

Roy will give you his take on all aspects of tomato production from seedlings to harvest. You will get tips on varietal selection, soil preparation, fertilization, pest/disease control, and cultural practices. He will touch on heirlooms, cherry tomatoes, roma tomatoes, and, of course, those red vine-ripes. Also, you will learn how to graft your own tomato seedlings for increased vigor and production.

    Biography:

Roy Wilburn, Horticulture Manager at Sunshine Care in Poway is our speaker.

Roy was a commercial tomato grower in Baja, California for 20 years and now maintains the organic greens at Sunshine Care. There, he supplies 20,000 pounds a year of fresh, high quality fruits and vegetables for the residents' daily menus and families-in-need in the Poway area. Vine-ripe tomatoes are the star of the gardens.

To be held rain or shine.

    Jeff Moore
    Soft Succulents

March’s speaker needs no introduction to most of our members; with 25 years experience running a successful Nursery, a large portfolio with gardens and two published books, all showcasing the fascinating world of Succulents, Jeff Moore will be joining us to promote his upcoming book: Soft succulents

Focusing primarily on genus’ like aeoniums, echeverias, crassulas, sedums, dudleyas and other softer non-spiny succulents, his newest book largely talks about the plants themselves along with information and pictures of them in their native habitats. His talk will largely go i more detail on these plants in cultivation, some common, some not often seen, but all guaranteed to intrigue us with amazing colors and textures.

We’re LA bound! Join fellow SDHS members and garden enthusiasts to visit two horticultural stars of Los Angeles: The Gottlieb Native Garden in Beverly Hills and The Getty Center.

Traveling by private motor coach from San Diego County, we will first visit The Gottlieb Native Garden, a flourishing California native plant ecosystem located just a few miles from Rodeo Drive. The garden is home to more than 200 hand-selected native plant species and nearly 400 documented wildlife species. Our SDHS group will have early admission to the day’s Open Garden organized by the Pacific Horticulture Society. For approximately two hours, we will explore the garden, meet and mingle with Susan Gottlieb, and enjoy refreshments. In addition to providing background on how her garden came to be, Susan will be available to sign copies of the acclaimed book, The Gottlieb Native Garden: A California Love Story. The book will be available for purchase at the event.

After the Gottlieb’s, we’ll head up to The Getty Center which is celebrating its 20th anniversary. Before exploring the galleries and grounds, we’ll enjoy a catered box lunch, then have a few hours to meander the garden, view exhibitions, and take in the breathtaking views. The Central Garden, created by San Diego-based contemporary artist Robert Irwin, lies at the heart of the Getty Center. The 134,000-square-foot design features a natural ravine and tree-lined walkway that leads the visitor through an extraordinary experience of sights, sounds, and scents. All of the foliage and materials of the garden have been selected to accentuate the interplay of light, color, and reflection.

Seven different exhibitions of art and artifacts will be on view in the galleries, with subjects ranging from Greek and Roman sculpture to a showcase of new acquisitions, including works by Michelangelo, Goya, and Degas.

After approximately three hours at The Getty, we'll board our motor coach, arriving back in San Diego in the late afternoon or early evening, depending on traffic.

Transportation: Private motor coach with small bathroom. Roundtrip from Old Town San Diego Transit Center and I-5/ La Costa Boulevard Park and Ride.

This year’s SDHS Garden Tour will highlight gardens in and around Encinitas, an area rich in horticultural history. Not only has the region been a giant in the commercial flower and plant trade, but even the city’s name has a link to horticulture: Encinitas means “little oaks” in Spanish.

The gardens on this self-guided tour will feature both fully mature as well as newly designed spaces, all suited to our Southern California climate. Several of the gardens are within large estates with multiple outdoor rooms, and some of the yards have raised beds and fruit trees, meadow-like areas, and unique plant cultivars. There will be eight or more gardens on the tour.

In keeping with past tours, we will also feature local artisans selling their hand-crafted garden art. Watch artists as they paint in the gardens, and meet SDHS community partners.

If you have or know of potential candidate garden in the Encinitas area, please email the GardenTour@sdhort.org

The San Diego Zoo’s Native Seed Bank
Saving Flora, One Seed at a Time

April is Native Plant Month, and we are in for a special treat. Stacy Anderson, Joe Davitt and Tobin Weatherson from the San Diego Zoo’s Institute for Conservation will describe their work establishing the Native Seed Bank. In collaboration with the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew, the Institute has been working to conserve and rescue many of our county’s indigenous plant species using a variety of methods for drying, freezing and storing seeds. The Native Seed Bank also undertakes special conservation practices so that the seeds they save will be viable and can be grown and propagated as needed.

Since 2004 the Institute has been working jointly with state and local government agencies such as the Bureau of Land Management and SANDAG, the San Diego Association of Governments, as well as Kew Gardens and local plant rescue groups to preserve our local native flora. While many of us are familiar with the San Diego Zoo’s efforts to breed and conserve endangered animal species, our April 9th meeting will showcase a mission of the zoo that is seldom seen. This mission is particularly important to SDHS, as it conserves plants from our own backyard that are threatened by urban development and a changing climate. Come listen to what is sure to be an inspiring and encouraging presentation.

    Nan Sterman
    Hot Color, Dry Garden

Nan Sterman is no stranger to San Diego gardeners. She is the author of numerous magazine and newspaper articles and two well-received books. Her long running television series, “A Growing Passion,” is an important source of information for novice and experienced gardeners alike. Now she has added a new book to her resume: Hot Color, Dry Garden showcases gardens across the Southwest, from the Mediterranean climate of San Diego to arid Arizona, addressing garden design, debunking low-water gardening myths, and offering a wealth of plant suggestions.

During the last few years, faced with a continuing drought, many in the Southwest have tried to plant in a more water wise manner. Unfortunately, water wise and drought-tolerant is too often equated with drab gravel lots enlived with just a few plants scattered here and there. Hot Color, Dry Garden provides home gardeners with an alternative: a color-filled garden that will flourish in low-water conditions. Please join us May 14th for a special night as Nan Sterman introduces us to her newest publication.
