Private Tour of Resendiz Brothers Protea Growers

Join us for a private tour of the growing grounds. Everything should be at its spring best.  On this tour of the nursery and packing facilities, we'll learn about propagating, planting, and maintaining many of the plants of the Proteaceae family.

Resendiz Brothers Protea Growers LLC was established in 1999 with a passion for growing exotic flowers and a commitment to providing customers with the highest quality products and service. With decades of farming experience in California's ideal Mediterranean climate, Resendiz Brothers delight in growing spectacular flowers for customers who demand unique and creative floral options. What began as a business focused on proteas has grown into a boutique-type flower farm offering a vast selection of the most distinctive American Grown flowers. In addition to proteas, the growers now cultivate more than 350 varieties of flowers and foliages, and the selection continues to grow!

*Note that online pre-registration is required.

Please note this is a tour and you need to be on-site by 10 AM

    John Bagnasco
    Preserving Rose Genetics

In the late 1990s, when John Bagnasco was chief rose buyer for Armstrong Garden Centers, a colleague chided him for not growing any roses in his home garden. “I thought, ‘he’s right’ and decided to give them a try,” Bagnasco says.

Today, more than 1,000 roses thrive on the half-acre garden around Bagnasco’s Fallbrook home. But this collection is different; the majority of the roses are rare and in danger of disappearing. Some are the last of their kind anywhere.

“It’s one of my obsessions now — preserving rose genetics,” said the veteran horticulturist who is co-host and president of the nationally syndicated “GardenLife Radio Show” that reaches more than a million listeners every weekend.

About the Speaker: John Bagnasco has been in the gardening industry for over 50 years, starting with a horticulture degree from Michigan State University and followed by a stint at Frank’s Nursery and Crafts in Detroit. After publishing his first book “Plants for the Home Vol. I” in 1976, he moved to California to become regional manager and buyer for the Nurseryland division of Sunbelt Nursery Group. He then became the head buyer for Armstrong Garden Centers based in Glendora, California.  John had a part-time affiliation with Creative Promotions for ten years before joining them full-time in October 2000 as a senior editor and radio personality for Garden Compass.  John has also taught horticulture classes at Palomar College and San Diego State University. He is the host of the DVD “The Essential Guide to Roses,” which also features Bryan Main and Bruce and Sharon Asakawa. His most recent book is Planting Designs for Cacti and Succulents.

    The presentations starts at 6:45.

In the many outdoor rooms you will find tranquil seating areas and a variety of whimsical works of art.  The garden also includes a large koi pond and vegetable garden.

    Scott Kleinrock
The No Sacrifice Low Water California Garden

Please note special date: this meeting is the FIRST Monday of the month, April 3!

Low water landscapes do not have to be about “going without.”  Learn how to envision spaces that accomplish everything you could want from a garden. These include providing color, habitat, shade, and places for respite and celebration, that simply need less water and resources because they are composed of plants naturally adapted to our regional conditions.  Examples include: the California Garden at the Huntington Library and Botanical Gardens, residential gardens, other public gardens, and inspirational images from the wilds of Southern California.

Scott Kleinrock is a horticulturist, landscape designer, and garden educator focused on California native, regionally adapted, and edible landscapes.  He is currently the Conservation Programs Manager at the Chino Basin Water Conservation District, a San Bernardino County agency dedicated to creating a culture of sustainable water use through demonstration and education.  Previously he was the Landscape Design and Planning Coordinator at the Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens where he led the planting design of the Brody California Garden, a 6.5 acre Mediterranean climate landscape.

    The presentations starts at 6:45.

This year’s Garden Tour takes garden lovers to one of the oldest and most tropical areas of San Diego County: Point Loma.

    Purchase Tickets

Volunteers get free entry to the gardens.

Some of the lush gardens we will visit include beautiful, mature palm trees and tropical plants, appropriate to the coastal setting. We will also take an up-close look at home gardens in several of the neighborhoods on the peninsula, starting with an artistic garden in Loma Portal and concluding with three unique gardens in La Playa. Along the way, you’ll visit one of San Diego’s best palm gardens, a garden created decades ago by Sinjen (our 1998 Horticulturist of the Year honoree), some top designer gardens, plant collector gardens, a fabulous potter’s garden, and several homes that were designed with the gardens in mind. This self-guided tour of over a dozen beautiful gardens showcases all that San Diego horticulture has to offer.

Selected vendors will offer garden-related for purchase, and will be stationed at various stops on the garden tour.

    • Online ticket sales begin in early 2017
    • Tour hours are 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM
