Herbs - how to grow & use

Learn about the three types of herbs- basil, seeded herb crops and perennials. Learn of their history, cultivation, companions and flavors.  Fresh herbs make everyday cooks great chefs!  After the class, we will walk Sunshine Care’s herb garden, then take some samples home.

Instructor: Roy Wilburn, assisted by Cindy Sparks

Roy Wilburn was a commercial tomato, pepper and strawberry grower in Mexico for 20 years.  He then went on to be the grower for Herb Thyme Farms in Oceanside for about 3 years.  He is now the Director of Horticulture at Sunshine Care, A Community of Assisted Living Homes in Poway.  There he manages 5 organic fields, a greenhouse, a rose garden and two fruit tree orchards plus the landscaping of the 32-acre facility. He also oversees food bank gardens on site and school gardens.
